EARTH ~

Starting Small

A tiny rivulet,

capillary for a creek

that is going home

to an ocean

beyond its

imagining.

Lunar Moth

Washing the dishes,

looking up —

a lunar moth

against the window.

Often I forget

how close —

this other world.

In Noon Heat

The man hoeing corn quits for lunch,

tries to squeeze into the shadow

of the useless scarecrow.

Mr. Girtley

His face

all stubble,

unshaven.

Tractor hat askew.

Ancient clothes

limp on his frame.

His tobacco patch,

cultivated

with a Farmall F-20,

chopped out with

a sharp hoe,

neat as could be.

Message Received

The full moon

swimming the whole ocean

to tickle my toes.

The Extreme Measure

Laughing / crying,

crying / laughing.

Not knowing

which came first

or how it began

or how it is to end.

Knowing this only

if you've been there.
