THIS MOMENT AT LONGHOUSE (NEW TITLES) ~

~

WHEN I WAS A POET IN CHINA ~ Norman Schaefer

Norman Schaefer

When I Was A Poet In China

Norman Schaefer’s long experience as a wilderness trekker in the Sierras and his admiration for ancient Chinese poets, exemplified by the ethereal presence of Li Po, informs this etude on the sights and sounds of West Coast ecology. When I Was A Poet In China is elegant yet accessible, with a deep respect for the sagacity of an ageless sensibility still relevant today. Centuries and cultures are bridged in this masterful dialogue reflecting on art, literature, and the vagaries of existence under the willows on the banks of Putah Creek.

BOB ARNOLD'S "SWWIMMER” ~

"Artists feed each other: John Cheever fed one of the best. Bob Arnold was inspired by the John Cheever’s short story.“The Swimmer” to write a fact based novel SWWIMMER (the double “W” is intentional) that honored Cheever’s achievement. In doing so, Arnold created a rare work of art: a stunning trade book that is also an artist-book, an example of masterful writing, exquisite design, and a story that takes the particulars of personal family relationships and makes them universal as they develop the themes of love, loss, abandonment, the striving to return to inner peace by finding a way outward, “swimming” into the world’s confusions and mysteries." — JOE NAPORA

A personal letter from Margaret Randall:

Dear Bob:
As it turns out, I read Swwimmer in one sitting last night. I'd intended only to glance over the book but it hooked me. I like the writing a lot. It seems a departure from your writing style in other books and particularly suited to telling this subtly complex story which--am I wrong?--seems to be modeled after your own son and his life. A very moving story. And the shape and heft of the book works well. I have been working on an essay about how these maga AI companies are buying up, scanning, and then destroying books... by the tens of millions. Part of what I am trying to transmit is the importance of the book as form as well as content. Swwimmer confirms this. And Schelling's translations from the Sanskrit, following the story of that first Everest climb and the lost codex that recorded the legend of the mountain's spirit were also fascinating. A rare jewel.
Thanks again.
Love, Margaret

Forethoughts ~ Buying A Farm

We thought we knew what we wanted,

put earnest money down the day we first saw

the farm (fools rush in).

We wanted to be on water, and this has three-fifths

of a mile of river frontage. Did not know we'd be here

for five of the six highest floods on record.

We wanted to be secluded. Over a mile back

from a one-lane county road. Road work and

tons of rock that would cost a small fortune.

No access to potable water. Three wells dug but

no good water (sulphur and salt, the culprits)

but a cistern off the barn still works.

No electric. A right-of-way lawsuit

with our neighbors. Lawyers on all sides lying to us.

Turns out they had no clear title to their place.

After forty years we wake to our view

of the river bottom and the surrounding hill,

often socked in with river fog. Can't imagine

seeing anything else every morning.

JONATHAN GREENE ~

Fishing

At times, taking the hook out,

before releasing back into the water

caught eyeing one another

in their different worlds.

A False Continuity

Seeming to me now.

I have been so many selves

unrelated one to another

though covered by the same name

and birth date, incidental facts,

dental records. More than inner self.

No sole soul, not even

look-alikes, now shrinking back

in height, adding weight.

Hard to explain this,

how now, looking back,

these selves do not know

one another.

Silence

Homage

Every street you wander,

carrying your family tree with you,

down to your toes, roots

looking for an earth to scratch in.

You thank your ancestors

for so much. Then stub your big toe

on some malady they passed on.

Encoded as it is.

You are their whole package.

By chance. Entrusted.

Good and bad.

And without thinking

add some small increment

all your own.

EARTH ~

Starting Small

A tiny rivulet,

capillary for a creek

that is going home

to an ocean

beyond its

imagining.

Lunar Moth

Washing the dishes,

looking up —

a lunar moth

against the window.

Often I forget

how close —

this other world.

In Noon Heat

The man hoeing corn quits for lunch,

tries to squeeze into the shadow

of the useless scarecrow.

Mr. Girtley

His face

all stubble,

unshaven.

Tractor hat askew.

Ancient clothes

limp on his frame.

His tobacco patch,

cultivated

with a Farmall F-20,

chopped out with

a sharp hoe,

neat as could be.

Message Received

The full moon

swimming the whole ocean

to tickle my toes.

The Extreme Measure

Laughing / crying,

crying / laughing.

Not knowing

which came first

or how it began

or how it is to end.

Knowing this only

if you've been there.

JONATHAN GREENE

This is a calling-out to all to give a full embrace right now to our good friend Jonathan Greene — rushed this morning into a Kentucky hospital for brain surgery. This is the moment, we are its time.

Friday PM update: We hear from Dobree — Jonathan has come through surgery and is resting. Terrific news.

Jonathan Greene has long been the proprieter, typographer, designer, and chief bottle washer with Dobree Adams at Gnomon Press from the Kentucky River watershed. His many books have been found in the best poetry collections since the 1960s. His skill at harvesting just the found-words, as above, is a craft shared with his once Appalachian neighbor and friend Jonathan Williams.
