I bought the Meatyard Aperture monograph in 1974 drawn to its strange imagery and probably the Wendell Berry connection. It was probably the first book of photographs I owned other than back-to-the-land how-tos. What I came to see, after years of reflection, was that this was collaborative work, getting his friends and neighbors to don the masks and such rather than a grab-and-get-gone freak show, more in tune with the work of folks like Mike Disfarmer. Still love him, forty years since that book came to hand.

stay weird (and warm),

Are there two names for two photographers and their subject(s) more aligned than Meatyard and Disfarmer? I don't think so.

Naturally we were growing up with the same books close to hand.

It's cold. But it was colder right here in this same spot when you found the Meatyard book in 1974.

Let's all stay warm, Bob
