EUGENIO MONTALE ~

Times at Bellosguardo

Oh now there in the glittering

stretch that bends toward the hills

the hum of evening lessens

and the trees chat with the hackneyed

murmur of the sand; and how this common life

no longer owned by our breath

gets channeled there, crystalline,

into orders of columns

and willows at the edges

and great moats in the gardens

by the overbrimming pools,

and how a sapphire light returns

for the men who live down there: it is too sad

such peace should enlighten in glimmers

and everything then roll on, with intermittent

flashes over the steaming riverbends,

with intersecting chimneys

and shouts from the hanging gardens

and consternation and long laughter

over patched roofs, among the arrases

of massed branches and a brilliant tail

that trails across the sky before

desire can find the words!

ELIZA GRISWOLD ~

Water Table

My earliest wish was not to exist —

to burst in the backyard

behind the rectory

where no one would see me.

This wasn't a plea to be found

or mourned for, but to be unborn

into the atmosphere. To hang

in the humid air, as ponds vent upward

from the overheated earth,

rise until they freeze

and crystallize, then drop

into the aquifer.

RUSSIA ~ UKRAINE ~

"Don't think yourselves better because you burn up

friends and enemies with long range missiles

without ever seeing what you have done."

THOMAS MERTON

It is unconscionable that while Ukrainians are being slaughtered, NATO members still send hundreds of millions of euros every day to Mr. Putin’s coffers to buy oil and gas. Political leaders who oppose a total halt to transfers to Russia are complicit in Mr. Putin’s war crimes. They are indirectly paying the wages of those who committed atrocities in Bucha. Ending all imports of Russian oil and gas would come at a significant price, but it would be small compared to the continued destruction in Ukraine. Here too, Finland is moving in the right direction, promising to end the country’s reliance on Russian energy imports in a matter of “weeks or months.”

RENE CHAR

The Resourceful Bulrush

I hear rain even when it's not the rain,

Just nightfall;

I rejoice in dawn even when it's not the dawn,

But my own white pulp stirring among the mud.

A child's mouth ruffles me with its teeth.

Love of the silent waters!

The hawthorn has the nightingale.

I have the spells that bind.
