JOHN PHILLIPS ~

Spell

Listen

carefully

you may

hear a word

in the silence

thinking

to say

something not

said before

to make something

happen

that hasn't

happened before

one word

with the belief

changing silence

changes everything

This

for Nelson Ball

There is

a here

we aren't

close to

even if

it's where

we are

Stone

If you insist on being here

at least say something

Six

Lana asked

if cats

knew they

were animals

did they have

a language

to know

it in

Or did they

think we were

animals

wondering

if we had a

language

to know

ourselves

Seen

for Eva

crows above a field

will always be

Van Gogh's

RE-READING KENT JOHNSON'S HOUSE ~

"ALL BECAUSE OF POETRY I HAVE A BIG HOUSE"

Kent Johnson's imagination and generosity has a superior quality to it, thus his poems and sketches are little miracles. It was one of many reasons I wanted to publish his I ONCE MET which I predict will be the author's best book. Hands down. Hands all over it.
. . .HOUSE is a continuation of this poetic odyssey.

RE-READING KARIN LESSING ~

Talisman

At the back of the head

a giant

anchors the eyelet sea:

in its jaw, a

bone

is singing: good fortune.

Moraine

Through

rhyme

braided

to thyme

followed

the scent that

tumbles,

breast-

high, dream-

thin.

Un-

thinking,

saw;

blinded,

heard

how they lie

cluster and

stray,

sometimes

seem to float.

Night Song

Cypress,

night's

needle, my

life's

slow gyre,

long night, long

dawn, the

star-

bristled day.

Wind-Gathered

Wind-gathered

             the tidal

air

—gardening

crests.

Nightbells'

alarm:

as many rooms as

tongues.

But from the

prairies' glitter

to the estuary:

the grain.

June Poppies

June

poppies

flush

with the road

opening,

shutting,

the pine

mirrors

out

over the fields

the star-

braced shadows:

all

things

under a name.

Dolls' Houses

I saw

through death's

little door

at Cartier's

the wizened tables,

and chairs.

the marble hall all suits & security

guards missing the rain in my garden

blossom stuck to her shoes all there is

autumn leaves gather in corners

doing nothing most gets done

old cooking pot under sky where I wash my hands gardening stir up

little frogs carry them to the pond where geese now argue no

HUSBANDRY ~

Husbandry

Attention sways, can't fix

to anything.

Every morning he goes to his garden

barefoot, for the cold pleasure. Each day the beans

are taller, the wind

has flattened them against the wire

long enough for a tendril

to take hold

that the vine may climb

toward sunlight. All of it

as if by accident — as if untended: this row of lettuce,

this of beets,

a vagrant clump of weeds, a pile of cuttings. After all,

it's the ratty ends of things

he finds attractive. Little room

to cultivate a life

or a wife.

To accept one's lot may be

to become a pillar of sorrow,

he thinks, but to be alone

is salt itself.

TO AN UNKNOWN SHORE ~

Theodore Enslin
(John Phillps, photo)

Night Study

Moon sickle above under

brush where it always was

crumble in flames of echo

where it always was in

clouds     of a last reflection

sound     only mouse footfall

silence     dark depth to plumb

onshore of little breeze

no wavelength     light to touch

as phosphorous fish scale

light poured into shadow

no live thing remaining

spindrift     footstep in it

sickle moon     it dies away.

As if there were time enough to notice

that stones will polish in the wind

or that's an accident of speech

where happening has nothing to do

with thought     the laggard as it always was

but still the rock face brightness

while sand will sink away from it.

What is wild in our own day

is not the wild that's past

there is a different savor

some of it not pleasant

perhaps it never was

but it differs now

does not depend on distances

as it once did     now

the wildness is within us

trying to get out

one day it may     but without us.

To put life or fire into a word?

No     those were always there

but the use of many words

will often bring what was there

incipient     to ruin take care

how you hold what has a heat that

may crumble into ashes.

A ring of changes

bells and circles

something round around us

changes in a measure

a breath so changed

rings these changes

becomes the circled ring.

Hermit Thrush

The singing's always new

the melody is old     or not

usually it is where

nothing new to sing or say

or sing when saying's not enough

or gives new voice(s)

Listen to the solitary     thrush

his heritage is full of sound

much of it what's not known.

A Tentative Tribute to C.C.

From such a language

as no words can say

without the wording

it leaves me breathless.

Twelve Gates to the City

I do not know your entrance

nor would you care for mine

there are many others     but

once we are inside we will meet

and recognize each other

we came our different ways

what a pleasure we are here together.

Moon Phase

We do not think too often

of the moon's light in the lilacs

too often looking at it     turning

Midas' touch to curse     it's in remembrance

once we see that light     and all around it

blooms     the fading petals in that light

the fading of reflection     light

that was a stranger to the moon

and darkly strange to lilacs as they slept.

Goodbye to all that world

where we once talked

as if there were no end

to it     yet went on further

to fall off     even from a globe

held sure by gravity

It is here and not here

a way to walk and say goodbye.

JOHN PHILLIPS ~

Gratitude

for Fadhila Chabbi

Wherever I walked dust covered my tracks

Whatever I made fell to a thousand pieces

Whatever I said was lost in the wind

Whoever I loved loved nothing in the end

Whoever I created vanished the same

~

What is happening

when this is happening

is what this

happens to be.

~

A Way

Your absence is

the silence

to say this

toward your not

being here.

~

As

meaningless

the sun

means

us

~

Afterwards

Every time I sit down

to write this

I expect someone else

to rise from my chair,

in a different world,

impossibly better.

~

No matter

what it is

I'm doing

I've never yet

got over the

idea

I'm pretending

to do what

I am.

~

This

Whatever else it is a poem

is often nothing

more than thinking

there's something there to be

found when there's

nothing but thinking so.

~

Reading

Remember

these words

know more

than you

you came here

for a purpose

no word

could give.
