RONALD BAATZ ~

Their ashes

where my father used to kneel

planting

where my mother used to bend

picking

As she puts

water on for tea

from my own pile

of bones and ashes

I reassess hers

In a crowded mountain bus

the endlessly monotonous

talk about Buddhist scriptures

when all I want to listen to

are the wheels on the road

The degrees to which

the closed fairgrounds

brings in even more

spellbinding beauty

to the sunset

In early spring mist

my lover floats across fields

from one dream

of sweet grass

to another

Our old

peacefully

decaying bodies

talking to children

selling lemonade

For anyone who sings

by a small window

in a small room

in the depths of

dying light

In the bedroom

sweeping up popcorn

from the night before

I see the hopeful eyes

of birds in the window

THE LAST MONKEY~

Once there was a goat

in my mother's village

that would dance while

the old knew to ignore

the affairs of the world

A DREAM IN THE CREAM ~

a selection

_____________________

O the purity

of the aloneness

of pulling off socks

Dark kitchen

but the lights of

a distant bridge

An old woman

breaking teeth

off a comb

Ignorant of their own souls

monkeys swinging

between temples

Possibly the

largest shell on the beach

and it looks like a shoe

Being sad

and pissing

at the same time

During lunch

stories about

sandwiches

Making

dying flowers glow

the moon's best intentions

Dusting a mirror

she takes a moment

to check her eyebrows

Small bronze head with big nose

holding down

take-out menus

Garden diary

all that's left

of the garden

Such an elegant rainfall

even the dog refuses

to shake it off

Cold summer rain

piercing my shirt

slipping between ribs

A small grave of sorrows

on one branch

in one bird

SOME RONALD BAATZ "WOODEN NOODLES" ~

from WOODEN NOODLES

                   __________________________

In spring

birds teaching leaves

how to sing

leaves teaching birds

how to whisper

Milky Way

a blissful spray of light -

we did cross this river

I remember that

little bridge

Usually

I sin in the house

and pray in the garden.

although on some nights

it happens the other way around

I make paper airplanes

out of love poems which

from so much practice

I am able to land

at her feet

Lightning

hitting a dead apple tree -

in childhood I thought nothing

of eating a

stick of butter

The house I lived in as a boy

good and bad angels

hanging in the closet

like bats the size

of overcoats

The rat I saw

down by the river

the rat that saw me

in dusty evening light

carrying a bag of cookies

Not so uncommon

a moth dying in its sleep

outside a diner

serving breakfast

at any hour of the day

Found in a pocket

of a jacket

in the closet

a desert night

from long ago

Do the ghosts

of childhood dogs

refusing to get out of my bed

have anything to do

with insomnia

A cheap clock wakes me

then a breeze from

a nearby burning field

lulls me back

to sleep

Throw my ashes

in the pond at Mt T

I have seen glints of heaven

in the eyes

of frogs

OLD PAJAMAS ~

from  Mad, with Rust

[ 5 poems ]

a sling blade

  kind of moon I

    want it sharper

gallons to miles

the night train's

beautiful mouth

spent fields

men move slow

and smoke

every cicada

  one tooth

    of the saw

sudden heavy rain I bend the body through

______________________________________________

Old Pajamas, and the name may all be in lower case

just sent me a new book of short poems

from the last place I had an A & W Root Beer —

Drive-in, roll the window down, tray set on the window edge

somewhere on Cape Cod long ago

and Mad, with Rust arrived out of the blue

by land mail today, about the only item that still comes through

the land mail these days — besides one or two close friends

pecking away at letters and using a stamp — are handmade books

by poets who will always make homemade books. Few

are ever recognized, but oh get yourself famous and

boy o boy will they go looking for them. The rarest of the rare.

Old Pajamas seemed to hand stitch this one with care.

1 of 15 copies designed & handmade by Andra Sheinkopf

at Black Fig Press.
