JAMES KOLLER 83, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JIM! ~

James Koller had a bunch of kids, all great kids, and I know most of them simply because their dad brought them to our house to meet them, and them us. It was that simple and familiar. Nothing like a visit!

Here is a message today from Bertie, Jim's son, a fine musician and craftsman, and while he is celebrating what would have been his father's 83rd birthday, he would like us to, too.

So get along.

JAMES KOLLER ON THE ROAD ~

J A M E S      K O L L E R

~

I've had this tape sitting here for over a month now waiting for a spring day
of a sort to bloom so I could set it forth on the Birdhouse just the way Jim Koller often
took off for the west (from Maine) during the Spring. He had much family out
that way. Friends. Totems.

This tape, shared from Jim's youngest son Bert, who made the
recording of Jim, maybe around the time Jim was in his early 70s
is my guess — and you will hear the old midwest of his tone
and language (born outside Chicago) and a little whiskey and whiskers.
These are some of Jim Koller's finest road poems, and after Kerouac
few saw the open road as open and skyline as Koller.

Take a listen.

BERTIE KOLLER FOR JAMES KOLLER ~

"This is a song I wrote for my father who passed away 10 December.
It was performed at a Winter Solstice celebration at my neighbor's house with Jamie (bass) & Sean (percussion) Oshima.

Bertie is the son of Leslie Burhoe and the poet Jim Koller and he's been playing music, working as a carpenter, a married man and father up in Maine for a good long time now. I last saw him when he joined his father and I at reading on the street to raise awareness and some funds for Hurricane Katrina. Jim brought some books to read out of, Bert brought his guitar. Both guys wore warm coats. The other day as a New Year approached Bert sent down to us his latest CD. I liked it as soon as it started up. "Enough is Enough" is the second song on the playlist, but I could have chosen any of the fifteen songs. Here's more :
