Commute
Rain on the river this morning —
a reminder that some day
the world must come down:
the heron from his high bank,
the terns in lasso above Battersea
or the planes descending over Kennington.
Each will work with the weather beneath them,
taking the tutelage of tide or wind
or engine to lift themselves up.
No one can soar indefinitely.
I am giving my life to you.
