RED PINE MEETS TAO YUANMING ~

Drinking Alone During Constant Rain

All lives come to an end
since ancient times it's been so
we hear the names of Song and Qiao
but where are they now
an old friend gave me some wine
he said it would make me immortal
I tried a cup and my cares disappeared
I poured again and forgot about Heaven
how could Heaven be other than here
nothing surpasses accepting what's real
celestial cranes with their magic wings
might reach the world's edge with a flap
since I embraced this truth
I have made it through forty years
my body may have changed long ago
my mind without doubt is still here

ANDREW SCHELLING, LINGUISTICS ~

Linguistics

Into the language we come

into the world

to depart by the same path we

arrived

the most hidden gulches hold petroglyphs

caves unvisited thirty thousand years contain ideograms

the tundra's littered with

calendar bones

a rustle, a swift breath of dialect

larynx, nostril & lip

certain archaic forms change hardly at all

though tools and food get reshaped

The word Ma

the number three

and for some hidden reason obscure to

linguistics

the term for

ashes

EAST WINDOW ~

Wandering

A runaway son

     will never come

            into his own

My treasure

is the cloud on the peak

            the moon over the valley

Traveling east or west

      light and free

            on the one road

I don't know whether

      I'm on the way

            or at home

To the Emperor's Messenger

The affairs of the world

      are nothing to me

I am tired of coming and going

this poor hut is perfect for me

      the one possession

of a monk who does nothing

In the stove

      there is no fire

            and no potato

so I have no time

      to wipe my mouth

            to greet the emperor's messenger

East Peak

From the beginning

people have gazed in awe at Taigaku

            the East Peak

It shoots up into the heavens

       on it the sun rises

            the moon rises

Its original blue and yellow

      are not among the colors

            of other mountains

It will hold the spring sunlight

      year after year

            after year

For A Monk Going West

For many years

      our friendship

            has ripened

One morning

      you say good-bye

and start down to the west

Stop trying to find the secret

      of succeeding

            as head priest

Look the sharp ax

      has been in your hands

            since the beginning

BILL PORTER RIDES ! ~

 C O P P E R     C A N Y O N     P R E S S    2016

49

Woods and springs make me smile

no kitchen smoke for miles

clouds rise up from rocky ridges

cascades tumble down

a gibbon's howl makes the path clearer

a tiger's roar transcends the world

pine wind sighs so softy

birds discuss singsong

I walk the winding streams

and climb the peaks alone

sometimes I sit on a boulder

or lie down and gaze at trailing vines

but when I see a distant town

all I hear is noise

A book like no other, but then Bill Porter/translator Red Pine (one in the same fellow)
is like no other. A treasury of a book that will take the reader many readings to fully hold as we travel with Bill on his pilgrimages throughout China, paying visits and homages with cups of Kentucky whiskey, perhaps a poem read at the site, certainly a bow, to dozens of China's greatest poets. He will break some bones getting there, wait with good healing and patience months to return on his journey, but finish and completeness there is. You will feel it with him. There is no translator, or even a living poet I know of, who brings you fully into the embrace.
